Finding Coupons in the Your Favorite Grocery Store
Many people forget that finding coupons can be done right in the store.
For years, I never really paid no attention to the stack of pamphlets, flyers, etc. sitting in the front entrance as you grab your cart. And certainly, never bother to look at those red little boxes sticking out of the shelves.
Typically, every manufacturer, at one point or another makes their printed coupons available in the stores. Sometimes, there are even higher values than the ones you find in your local newspaper.
Any time I see a coupon dispenser, if I like the product, I take a few. I than look for the products, usually it is in the same area. If the product is on sale I buy it and if the coupons is close to its expiration date I'd buy several product with two coupons. Some people think that just because there is a coupon on the shelf, the product is not on sale, more than a few times I have seen the opposite, usually the product is on sale. But, if it is not, then just hold on to the coupons until the item is on sale.
Here are things to look for in finding coupons in-store.
There is actually a wide variety of different types of coupons available in grocery stores.
Some you will recognize, others never seen them before.
The following are a few common examples of in-store grocery coupons you’re likely to find:
Coupon Dispensers - Blinkies
This machine may come in different colors and sizes, but they are all called “blinkies” and are distributed by SmartSource (same companies that distribute coupons in your local newspaper).
The reason for its name; there is a blinking light on top to attract customers as they are going down the aisles. You can use these coupons immediately or any time before the expiration date and at any store that accepts manufacturer’s coupons.
Once a month these coupon machines are placed in the stores and are refilled weekly. As any distributed coupons, coupons can vary from store to store and from region to region.
I love these. This dispenser is attached to either the freezer or refrigerators. I think many good frozen products can be expensive, so I look for these boxes. They usually come in bright colors so you can see it.
Do you ever get coupons with your receipt?
Well, this is part of the Catalina Category Marketing (CCM) Company. They reward customers with promoted products that is similar to what they bought that day. These offer incentives for your next shopping trip. Most coupons will not expire for at least 3-4 weeks.
Pay attention, because often manufacturer Catalinas print store's logo on them. Some have said that you can be used at any store that accepts manufacturer coupons. I would check with customer service before shopping and show them which coupon you are planning to use.
Take a look at the barcode and if it has the double barcode, the first one starting with a 5 or a 9, and says manufacturer coupon, you should have no problem, most of them say "redeemable at X" but will usually not say "redeemable ONLY at X".
If you have any problems with Catalina type coupons, their toll free numbers are 1-(888) 322-3814 or 1-888-8COUPON (1-888-826-8766).

Tear pads:
These are pads, which are stocked on the shelf or display where you simply tear the coupon of a pad of coupons.
Peelies:
These are the coupons that are attached directly to the product. Generally they indicate “use me now”. These coupons are frequently unnoticed at the time of purchase, but can be removed and redeemed at any time before the expiration date. Beware: On most produce, if you see these coupons sticker, it is probably because the item is ready to go out of code or the expiration is very near, ie. as bag lettuce.
Finding Coupons in the grocery is great when you can find an entire booklet, such as the ones from "GO ORGANIC", see below:
Brochures and Loose Coupons:
Brochures frequently include coupons, rebates, or other savings information. Coupons may also be found “loose”, where a stack of individual coupons are placed on a counter or she
For example, in 2009, 2.7 million coupon books were given out through participating retailers and directly from the Go Organic! Earth Day team.
In April 2010, the new coupon books will be available in retail stores nationwide.
Check back for future updates! This book is great, last year in Giant, I saw this booklet full of organic coupons in the aisle of the organic section sitting on a display.
Watch out for them in April 2010.
Winetags and Collars:
These are coupons that hang around the neck of wine, olive oil, juice, or any other bottle or jar.
